How to Prepare Your Home Swimming Pool for Winter
As the temperatures drop and the days get shorter, it’s time to start thinking about preparing your home swimming pool for winter. Proper preparation not only protects your pool from damage but also makes it easier to reopen when summer rolls around.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting your pool ready for the colder months.
1. Clean Your Pool Thoroughly
Start by giving your pool a deep clean. Remove any leaves, debris, or dirt from the water using a pool net or vacuum. Scrub the walls and floor to prevent algae growth during winter. A clean pool is easier to maintain and less likely to develop problems.
2. Balance the Water Chemistry
Before closing your pool, test and balance the water chemistry. Aim for the following levels:
- pH: 7.2–7.6
- Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
- Chlorine: 1–3 ppm
Balanced water prevents corrosion, scaling, and algae growth during winter. Use BioGuard Balance Pak 100 to adjust alkalinity and BioGuard Lo 'n Slo to lower pH if it’s too high.
3. Lower the Water Level
To prevent overflow from winter rains, lower the water level slightly below the skimmer. This also helps protect your pool equipment from freezing damage.
4. Shock the Pool
Shocking your pool with a high dose of chlorine before closing it helps kill any bacteria or algae. Use BioGuard Burn Out Extreme for a powerful and effective shock treatment. This ensures your pool stays clean and clear throughout winter.
5. Clean and Store Pool Equipment
Remove and clean all pool equipment, including ladders, filters, pumps, and heaters. Drain and store them in a dry, sheltered place to prevent damage from frost or moisture.
6. Cover Your Pool
A high-quality pool cover is essential for winter. It keeps debris out, reduces evaporation, and protects your pool from UV damage. Make sure the cover fits securely and consider using a cover pump to remove any standing water.
7. Prepare the Plumbing for Winter
If you live in an area prone to freezing temperatures, it’s important to prepare your pool’s plumbing for winter. Drain the water from the pipes, pumps, and filters, and use antifreeze if necessary. This prevents cracks and damage caused by freezing water.
8. Add a Winter Algaecide
To prevent algae growth during winter, add a long-lasting algaecide like BioGuard MSA Extreme. This product provides extended protection and keeps your pool water clear until spring.
Why Prepare Your Pool for Winter?
Taking the time to properly prepare your pool for winter saves you time, money, and hassle in the long run. It prevents damage, keeps your pool clean, and ensures it’s ready to enjoy when summer returns.
